Why Microchip Your Pet?

At 4 Paws, we strongly recommend that every pet have a microchip to help increase the chances of them being reunited should they ever get separated from you.

A microchip is a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, that’s implanted under your pet’s skin—usually between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique ID number, which can be read by a scanner at most vet clinics, shelters, and animal control facilities. When your contact information is registered in a national pet recovery database, it’s easy for someone to notify you if your pet is found.

One of the biggest advantages of microchipping is its reliability. Unlike tags or collars, it can’t be lost or removed. It provides permanent identification throughout your pet’s life. This is especially important for indoor cats, who often aren’t tagged because they’re not expected to go outside—but accidents happen.

Microchipping is also a one-time procedure that’s quick, safe, and relatively inexpensive. It requires no surgery or anesthesia, and most pets don’t even flinch during the process.

Most importantly, microchipping dramatically increases the odds of a happy reunion. According to studies, microchipped dogs are over twice as likely to be returned to their owners, and cats more than 20 times as likely, compared to those without chips.
